Four musicians who play traditional Korean instruments perform the national anthem of South Korea while tied together by ropes; in contrast to an orchestra, where the number of sounds increases in proportion to the number of parts, this “Songs While Bound” series turns each performer into an obstacle for the others. As the number of performers working against each other increases, the total sound is erased in inverse proportion.

The social bonds that connect us in groups and communities are increasingly strained. This work satirizes this dilemma of connection and restriction while presenting an image of us resisting.
